Fibre-Reinforced Concrete Part 1
In this part 1 of 2 fibre-reinforced concrete course, learn about the types of concrete fibres and their benefits in concrete
The technology of reinforcing a brittle material with fibrous material began more than 1000 years ago. During the 1950s, people tested the idea of dosing a steel reinforcement directly into a concrete mixer, as an alternative to placing steel bars. Steel reinforcement was cut down into smaller pieces to fit in the mixer and this eventually developed into steel fibres - this began the now widespread usage of fibre-reinforced concrete in the construction industry.
Nowadays, there is a wide range of fibres used in reinforced concrete which have bring many benefits to the concrete, and they can be for structural or non-structural purposes.
In part 1 of 2 of this fibre-reinforced concrete course, we will identify which types of concrete fibres can be used and some of the benefits of using fiber-reinforced concrete. In part 2 of 2, you can then learn about the characteristics of concrete fibres and how they are combined with concrete.
